From 1953 to 1961, she served as the second lady of the United States as her husband was vice president.

While in high school, she was employed as a janitor and bookkeeper at the local bank and assisted the family farm.

She married future President Richard Nixon in June 1940 after he proposed to her on their first date together. She had two daughters with him.
