Belgrade
23.52 million (1991)
A former country in Southeast and Central Europe. It was made up of six republics: Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia. By January 1992, the country ceased to exist as a result of political upheavals and conflicts.
The official languages of Yugoslavia were Serbo-Croatian, Slovene and Macedonian. It was the only socialist state to have open borders and allowed locals and tourists to freely move around freely. During World War II, Belgrade was bombed twice – once in 1941, by the Axis Powers, and in 1944, by the Allies.
