The US state of West Virginia is located in the Southern region. Before statehood the region also held the names Vandalia, Kanawha, and Appalachia. The state's largest metropolitan area is that of Charleston–Huntington. The state's official mammal is the black bear. It was the 35th state overall to join the Union.
The state's motto is, "Montani semper liberi." John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is considered to be one of the state's official anthems. The golden delicious apple was discovered in the state.
