The US state of Virginia is located in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern regions. Prior to European settlement the region was occupied by the Powhatan indigenous communities. The state's largest metropolitan area is that of the Washington metro. The state's official mammal is the Virginia big-eared bat. It was the 10th state to join the Union.
The state's motto is, "Sic semper tyrannis." Scenes from the feature film Dirty Dancing were filmed in Mountain Lake, Virginia. The state is also home to Shenandoah National Park.
