A landlocked country located in Central Asia. It is surrounded by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Russia ruled Uzbekistan for nearly two centuries.
The Uzbek language is the most common language and Russian is widely spoken. It lies mainly between two major rivers, the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya. Islam is the predominant religion and most Uzbeks are Sunni Muslims.
