A self-ruled island located in East Asia. China claims it is a province of the People's Republic of China, whereas Taiwan maintains it is already an independent country. The island was formerly referred to as Formosa.
The highest mountain of the island is Yushan Mountain known as Jade Mountain. The Taipei 101 skyscraper is the main landmark of the country. It has many ancient temples and pagodas such as the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas at the Lotus Pond in Khaosiung.
