A country in Oceania that comprises the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and its offshore islands in Melanesia. It is the world's third largest island country. It became an independent Commonwealth realm in 1975.
It is home to at least 750 tribes. Britain, Germany, Australia and Japan all occupied areas of the country. Its flag is red-black diagonally divided and features a yellow bird-of-paradise and the Southern Cross constellation.
