The state of Montana is located in the Mountain West division of the US. It is bordered by four states and Canada to the north. It is the 8th-least populous state in the US with its largest metro area being Billings. The state's official mammal is the grizzly bear. It was the 41st state to join the Union.
The state's motto is, 'Oro y Plata.' The state's name comes from the Spanish word for mountainous, 'montaña.' Beginning in the 1800s the state saw a gold and silver mining rush. Film director David Lynch was born in Montana.
