The state of Minnesota is located in the Upper Midwestern region of the US. It is the twelfth-largest state in terms of overall land size. Minnesota's largest metropolitan area is that of Minneapolis–Saint Paul. The state's official bird is the Common loon. The Minnesota Territory became a part of the Union in 1858 and the state's motto is L'Étoile du Nord.
The state shares a border with Canada to the north. Prior to European colonization the region was inhabited by members of the Dakota people.
