The US state of Maine is the easternmost state in the New England region. Maine is the ninth-least populous state in the US. The legislation outlined in the Missouri Compromise led to Maine becoming the 23rd state in 1820. Maine's largest metropolitan area is that of Portland. The state's official mammal is the Moose.
Maine is widely recognized throughout the US for its lobster. The privately held retail company L.L. Bean was founded in Freeport. It shares a border with only one other state.
