A landlocked, mountainous country in the south-central Balkans. It is boarded by Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. It was formerly known as Macedonia.
There are supposed parts of the cross on which Jesus was crucified in the foundations of monasteries in Kichevo and Debar. Until the mid-20th century, Macedonian was predominantly a spoken language. Its capital has suffered several devastating earthquakes.
