The state of Louisiana is located in the deep American South. It is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to its south. In terms of population Louisiana is the 25th most populous. Its largest metropolitan area is that of Greater New Orleans. The state's official mammal is the black bear. Louisiana and Missouri were originally one state prior to their separation in 1812.
Louisiana is home to the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans. The state itself was named after the King of France, Louis XIV. Jazz music was originated in New Orleans.
