The Hoosier State
Indiana is a US state located in the Midwestern region. Indiana became the 19th state to enter the Union in 1816. The state's largest metropolitan area is that of Indianapolis. The state's official bird is the northern cardinal. The region was inhabited by the Shawnee, Miami, and Illini people of the Algonquian family prior to European exploration.
The state is home to the Indianapolis 500, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Indiana Pacers. Residents of the state are referred to colloquially as Hoosiers. Indiana's state motto is, "The Crossroads of America."
