Illinois is located in the Midwestern US. The state is the sixth-largest state in terms of population size. Its largest metropolitan area is Chicagoland. Illinois' official land mammal is the White-tailed deer. Before becoming a state in 1818 the territory was known as the Illinois Territory. Its capital at that time was a French settlement called Kaskaskia.
Willis Tower in Chicago is one of the tallest buildings in America. Illinois produces more nuclear energy than any other state in the US. Some of the largest industries in Illinois are coal mining, oil production, agriculture and manufacturing.
