Located in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii sits 2000 miles from the US mainland. It is the 11th-least populous state in the US. The state's largest metropolitan area is that of Honolulu. Hawaii's state fish is the Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa. Hawaii is the only US state that is an archipelago.
James Cook was the first non-Polynesian explorer to arrive in the region in 1778. Hawaii is home to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the world's largest naval command. Hawaii is the only U.S. state that grows coffee. Oahu is home to a popular Dole pineapple plantation.
