A country in Central America bordered by Honduras and Guatemala. From the late 19th to the mid-20th century, it endured political and economic instability. The Salvadoran Civil War was fought between the military-led government backed by the United States, and a coalition of guerrilla groups from 1979 to 1992.
Known as the land of volcanoes, El Salvador has frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. Its national bird is the Torogoz. Coffee cultivated in the western part of El Salvador is world famous.
