Colorado is located near the Southern Rocky Mountains, Great Plains, and the Colorado Plateau. It is the eighth largest state in the US by land mass. The state's largest metropolitan area is that of Denver. Colorado's official land mammal is the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. In 1876, the state became the 38th state to join the Union.
The state is where the Union Pacific Railroad met the Central Pacific Railroad which formed the first transcontinental railroad in the US. Denver received its nickname 'Mile-High City" because it sits an an elevation of exactly one mile above sea level.
