Located on the Pacific Coast, California has the largest population of all the US states. It is also the third largest state by land area. The largest metropolitan area in California is that of Los Angeles. California became the 31st state to join the Union in 1850. The state's official land mammal is the California grizzly bear.
California was originally owned by Mexico until 1848. It was around this time that the state experienced the California Gold Rush. In 2022, California was named as the world's fifth-largest economy. California is home to popular attractions such as Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, and the Golden Gate Bridge.
