An island country in the Caribbean known for its fine sandy beaches and colorful reefs. The British established a colony in 1627 and began growing cotton, tobacco and sugar. The island remains a part of the Commonwealth.
The country's name is derived from the Bearded Fig Trees once found in abundance on the island. The main industries are tourism, sugar production and light manufacturing. The national dish is Cou-Cou and flying fish.
