Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the annual Academy Award for Best Directing is given in honor of a film director who exhibited outstanding directing in the film industry for the year prior.
The very first Academy Awards split the award between "Dramatic" and "Comedy" categories. Damien Chazelle was the youngest to ever win the award and Kathryn Bigelow is the only woman to have won.
